Directed by Phillip Graneto, students from Rowan University’s Department of Theatre and Dance will be putting on a performance of Moliere’s The Misanthrope in Tohill Theatre on the Glassboro campus.
The production will be based on the English translation that was put out in 1666, which retains much of the original structure of the verses.
The play is based on the life of Alceste when he begins to fall for Celimene, a shallow but beautiful woman. Alceste is an honest man, convinced he can see through smooth talk. Once he becomes attracted to Celimene, this goes out the window and he is blinded by his attraction.
The cast includes Jennifer Buckley of Westampton Township as Basque, Jeff Flood of Franklinville as Clitandre, Laura Fullerton of Williamstown as Arsinoe, Steve Grande of Pennsauken as Oronte, Jay Harris of Atco as Acaste, Kelsey Malone of Tabernacle as Celimene, Alex McCarty of Chatham as Philinte, Michele Mizeski of Califon as Eliante, Jim Quartuccio of Avenel as Alceste and Juan Sanchez of Teaneck as Dubois.
The production aims to be a contemporary take on the classic play. It will play February 25 until the 28th. Thursday to Saturday, the performances will be at 8pm and the Sunday performance will be at 3pm. The cost is $10 for general admission; and $5 for seniors, non-Rowan students, Rowan staff and alumni. Tickets for Rowan students are free with valid ID. For more information or advance tickets, visit rowan.tix.com or call the box office at (856) 256-4545.
